Name: Melissa Maitland
Age: 15
Organisation: Gorgie City Farm
Melissa is enjoying her third and fourth years at Tynecastle High School. This takes up a lot of her time but she makes space in her busy life to help look after the family pets; 2 dogs, 2 cats, 3 hamsters and a parrot. It was her love of animals that provoked her to apply to volunteer at Gorgie City Farm. Melissa also finds time to support her local football team, Hearts.
Melissa approached the Farm directly to offer her time and has now been working there for three years. She works one whole day a week; weekend days during term-time and any day, or days, during school holidays. She spends her time between the Pet Lodge and the main Farm. She cleans out the animal homes, feeds the animals and gives them affection. She escorts visitors and introduces young children to animals in 'Cuddle Corner'.
Melissa enjoys getting to know the animals, volunteers and regular visitors. She feels that her role gives her something useful and enjoyable to do in her spare time. She thinks that the experience she is gaining is going to be useful for her CV and also her personal development. The work has helped her become more patient, resourceful and tough (as she is out in all weathers). It makes her feel good to help out.
The impact that her voluntary work is having on her life is continuous; she is gaining knowledge about animals, including humans! She recommends the work to other young people because it's fun, good experience and something to do.
